Message

“Birth Day”
All life on earth has its day to start.
That day is the 0th birthday - the dawn of a long, long journey.
And for every generation, this is the starting point of where hope begins.
In the 21st Century, with the increasingly fast transition of changing eras, we are living in an age where everyone has access to an unlimited amount of information.
The expansion of globalization via the Internet; Japan enduring the Great East Japan Earthquake; the Arab Spring being birthed via social networking; even chaos, with events like the shock of terror attacks in Europe; and the result of the musical superpower of Britain exiting from the EU.
2016 is a year where the world is running with blindfolds.
If new life can be born in an era where we cannot guess what lies one step ahead, then that is, always, a universal message that the future is still bright.
Technology is growing together with society, however divided we've become. And if you look in the long term, the world is improving.
That is the theme of my first album in 10 years.
Music is a heavily influential art-form of our times.
And for anybody stumbling as to what they would like to listen to, I would be happy if this album could be your birthday present from GENTOUKI.

Self Liner Notes

Birth Day

Although the title of this song is “Birth Day,” the meaning is not about the anniversary of birth, but one's “0th birthday.”
This song is about a true birth day-the moment that a new life comes into the world.
The motif of this song is the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, as I wrote this song during the aftermath.
Along with many other musicians, I have at times felt the necessity of music dwindle, and have at times lost all faith in the power of music.
Recovering from that place and bringing forth new songs out of it, I decided to choose that theme. “New life.”
This song has words that I wish to convey to my own child, with all my heart and soul. Lastly, this is the album's title-track.

Fifty-Thousand Year Survivor

It's said that around 50,000 years ago in Africa, spoken language began to rapidly develop in Homo sapiens.
I don't know the exact cause, but these days, mankind has complexified language into a precise method of information transmission. This distinctlyhuman trait led to the birth of civilization, belief-systems, and to the beginning of known history.
We've arrived to a mesmerizing era where "information" can be instantly accessed via the Internet from anywhere in the world.
That species has survived over 50,000 years, evolving from living in plains and jungles, to cities, and finally to the discovery of radio waves.
I believe that with this new transition as well, that humans had never experienced such an immense transformation before.
It goes without saying that music, too, has tapped into that "information."
My thoughts went into the the relentlessness of those humans' pursuit of survival when I wrote this song.

A Seagull's Heart

Of all my music work, this was the first song I've written from a female pointof-view.
The lyrics are particularly easy to identify with, and the chord-work and melody are wound together with the lyrics to form a psychological portrait. The end result is not jazz, rock, or pop - but rather, a song of mysterious genre.
I particularly like this atypical-genre feeling.

Bye Bye

This is a self-cover of a song I wrote for singer Kaoru Miyazaki.
It's a song about a pair of lovers, who must say goodbye because of their love for one-another.
Although this is a farewell song, the ex-lovers both positively look and move forward.
My favorite kind of lyrics are those that are easy to relate to. This type of gentle ballad is unusual for a GENTOUKI song.

Desert of Love

I wrote this song about the romance of a close friend.
It's about repeatedly breaking up with and continuously reconciling with a selfish and flirtatious girl.
To say that someone has a clown's expression is an old-timey saying, but that suits how he expressed his sorrow.
In all my music and albums, this is the most self-describing song.
Restless chord work, a drifting melody, and my favorite shuffle-swing rhythm comprise this song.
This song features the guitar work of prodigious young guitarist Kazuya Fukuzawa.
And brass section of very popular saxophonist, Yoshinari Takegami's group. It's splendid.

Anniversary of Ice Cream and a Skirt

This is a remake of an offer song I wrote for Tokyo Bossa Nova.
Brazilian music is at the core of my music roots.
With all my soul I wanted to bring that influence to the forefront, but in the end, it fused with pop.
This song's rhythm construction is duple time, which is different than pop rhythm, but it has a pop melody.
I'd be thrilled if you enjoy the outcome.
The accented percussions is performed by the Latin-influenced Atsushi Ideno.

Algorithm

People of today spend their time examining an infinite number of algorithms of information.
The day when we're able to analyze structure of the human brain also must eventually be on the way.
If you look to science fiction, when the human brain is re-created; The meaning of medicine, reproduction, labor, etc., will be lost. And we'll have become a super-humans capable of intergalactic travel.
Where am I going with this...
In any case, that discussion is still of the distant future.
Civilization is not in opposition against technology, and both strive to exist in unity. In practice it's much more complex.
This song states that in the conditions of the present day, we are in a transitioning period and will continue to transition.
On saxophone is Yoshinari Takegami, who also performed on "Desert of Love."

Busy Days

As convenient as the world has become, we continue to work hard. It's a phenomenon that everyone will have experienced.
This is a song as straight-forward as I could be about the hustle and bustle of modern society.
With commentary from a musical point-of-view, it was a personal challenge to write a song with riff-work rather than chord-work.
In order to make it easy to get into, only the final chorus concludes with chord work.
It's pop, so that's unavoidable.

Shungo Ito(KINMOKUSEI)

TORI MIKI

Annu(Coalamode.)
